FISSION-FRAGMENT-INDUCED EXPANSION IN SINGLE-CRYSTAL ALPHA ALUMINA

Fission fragments were recoiled into flat Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ specimens, and the height of the expansion step formed at the boundary between irradiated and unirradiated regions of the surface was measured by interferometry techniques. Expansion normal to the surface was found to be independent of crystal orientation for specimens cut along three different axes. Expansion was not a linear function of fission-fragment concentration as a factor of ten increase in exposure produced only a factor of three increase norimal to the specimen surface were at least three times larger than expansion coefficients calculated from the bending moment of thin, fission-fragment-irradiated Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ disks. This result indicates that fission-fragment-induced expansion is not isotropic but that the stresses are preferentially relieved by expansion normal to the free surface. (auth)
