The x-ray-diffraction results on NbO/sub 2/, prepared by heating in vacuo a mixture of powders of Nb/sub 2/O/sub 6/ and Nb, confirm the previous electron-diffraction results obtained with thin films. Besides the strong reflections attributed to a rutile lattice structure, a great number of additional weak reflections were observed. Following this observation, the structure analysis was undertaken by calculating the structure factors on various models. Three types of possible structures derived from the rutile structure were investigated; a superlattice, a defective lattice, and an interstitial lattice structure, respectively. It is concluded that there is only one possible structure modification of a superlattice type. Some of the O-Nb-O molecules in the rutile structure change their molecular orientation on the (001) planes whose stacking sequence is expressed by alpha BETA alpha ' BETA alpha ... (auth)
