The design philosophy of prestressed concrete pressure vessels is discussed in some detail. The various components (lining, openings, ligaments, cabling systems) are considered. The design of cylindrical vessels with flat ends, spherical vessels, and cylindrical vessels with spherical ends is considered, and it is concluded that spherical vessels meet the design requirements most fully. The most economic pressure range is found to be 300 to 400 psig for cylinders and 600 to 800 psig for spheres. The need for model tests for each design is emphasized. A research program should be conducted on the behavior of materials, of parts of vessels, and of complete vessels, and the most important aspects of the behavior to be studied are outlined. (D.L.C.)
