INSTABILITIES IN TWO-PHASE FLOW. PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENTS

Experiments were performed to study the conditions associated with the production of oscillatory instabilities, when evaporation occurs in two parallel heated channels. The effects of different inlet flow conditions were studied, first using sub-cooled water (at 80 deg C), and later, using two-phase steam and water mixtures at inlet. Although these were preliminary experiments, and were of a qualitative nature, some important effects were noted. From these tests it is concluded that a negative slope on the pressure drop/mass flowrate curve is not a necessary condition for producing oscillatory instabilities. This agrees with eariier evidence, and the theoretical predictions of Quandt. Also it appears that when two-phase conditions exist at the inlet to the heated section, no oscillatory instability is likely to occur. (auth)
