Performance of lanthanum hexaboride as an ion source cathode was studied using 8-mm diameter, 1.5-mm thick compressed LaB/sub 6/ powder specimens (68% La, 30.7% B, and O.11% C). Performance characteristics of thermally purified and treated sources in helium were: U/sub a/ = 200 v, I/sub 7/= 1.5 amp, and H = 900e. Discharge streaming density was 5.3 amp/cm/sup 2/; ion streaming density in the source reached 0.3 amp/cm/sup 2/; the life of the cathode was 30 to 40 hrs. (R.V.J.)
