INVESTIGATION OF THE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF COLD EXTRUSION FOR ZIRCALOY-2 TUBING PRODUCTION. Quarterly Technical Progress Report, October-December 1961

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4653429· OSTI ID:4653429

The extrusion of fuel-element-size tubing was continued, and the product at each stage of the sequence of operations is illustrated. The precision die set for piercing is described. Results of first- and second-tube extrusions are reported. Pole-figure studies of the cold-extruded tubing and of commercial tubing indicate that the cold-extruded tubing should have greater burst strength. It is concluded that Zircaloy-2 tubing can be cold-extruded from 1-inchdiameter bar stock, and that the cold-extrasion process is economic. (D.L.C.)
