CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF STRONTIUM METAL ABOVE 25 KBAR AND ITS RELATION TO YTTERBIUM

The electric resistivity and x-ray-diffraction pattern of Sr metal were obtained at regular pressure intervals up to 42 kbar. The results indicate that the bcc phase found above 557 deg C at 1 atm is the same as the bcc pressureinduced phase at 42 kbar and room temperature and that the fcc-bcc phase boundary, commencing at 557 deg at 1 atm, intersects the pressure axis near 35 kbar at room temperature. The existence of a triple point above room temperature and below this pressure appears tenuous. On the basis of the similarity of Sr and Yb properties, the results indicate that 6s, 6p, and 5d electronic bands are involved in the rb semiconductive transition and that the 4f electrons are not involved in the fcc to bcc transition in Yb.
