Title: RADIOLYSIS OF BENZENE AND 1,3,5-OCTATRIENE-7-OL IN SOLID SOLUTION AT 77 K (in French)

1,3-cyclohexadiene, 5-hydroxyethyl-1,3-cyclohexadiene, and 6-phenyl-5- hydroxyethyl-1,3-cyclohexaethanol were found in solutions of benzene--ethanol irradiated by x or gamma rays at 77 deg K and then heated to room temperature. These compounds are formed by the addition to benzene of radicals formed in the radiolysis of the solvent. Analogous results were observed for solutions of benzene in methylcyclohexane or in methylcyclohexane-isopentane mixtures. An attempt was made to show an opening of the benzene cycle analogous to that observed in the photolysis of solid solutions where a linear substituted triene is formed as the principal product. However, the radiolysis decomposition of 1,3,5-octatriene-7-ol in solid solution at 77 deg K shows that the opening of the benzene cycle is not easily detectable. (tr-auth)
