EFFECTS OF $gamma$-RADIATION ON CATION EXCHANGE RESINS (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Tokyo Metropolitan Isotope Centre Ann. Rept.
OSTI ID:4650837
The effects of Co/sup 60/ gamma radiation on the exchange capacity, swelling characteristics, and oxidizability of the cation exchange resins were studied. Air-dry and wet cation exchange resins were irradiated (up to 6 x 10/ sup 7/ r) in H, Na, Fe, and Pb form. Radiaiion caused a decrease in exchange capacity of the resins, and the rate of decrease was highest in H form, 6% at 5 x 10/sup 7/ r, then Na, Fe, and lowest in Pb form. The effect of irradiation on swelling characteristics of the resins was not remarkable throughout the whole range of radiation doses applied, except for H form resin. In this case, the swelling decreased remarkably at a dose over 6 x 10/sup 7/ r in a dry state, while it decreased only a little in a wet state. Pb form resin seemed most stable against radiation, both in a dry and a wet state. In a Fe form resin, the amount of functional groups lost by irradiation of 8 x 10/sup 7/ r corresponded to the total amount of ferrous and ferric ions liberated from the resin into water. (auth)
