PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF IN-PILE CAPSULE EXPERIMENTS IN THE KEWB REACTOR. Quarterly Progress Report for Period Ending March 31, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4649894

Measurements were made of transient steam formation in capsule experiments in the KEWB reactor. Measurements of volume changes due to nonboiling phenomena are interpreted. Data on transient steam formation are presented for some runs with a fuel disk enriched to about 48% U/sup 235/. Simultaneous measurements of steam-void volume, pressure, fuel disk surface temperature, and KEWB reactor power are shown in graphs. The measured surface temperature histories were compared with the saturation temperature histories that were obtained from the measured pressures. High-speed motion pictures showed that bubble nucleation occurs first in one local region of the surface and then propagates rapidly to cover the complete surface. (M.C.G.)
