Li$sup 7$(p,$gamma$)Be$sup 8$ EXCITATION CURVE FROM 1.5 Mev TO 11 Mev
The Li/sup 7/(p, gamma )Be/sup 8/ reaction was studied from 1.5 to 11 Mev bombarding energy using the proton beam from the Rice tandem Van de Graaff accelerator. The sum of the gamma rays leading to the ground and first excited states of Be/sup 8/ shows a giant resonance peaked at 7.3 Mev with a possible secondary peak at 6 Mev bombarding energy. Five angular distributions were measured below 7 Mev and showed isotropy within 25% in all cases. A tunnel diode discriminator and linear gating circuit were used to prevent excessive pile-up from neutron capture in the NaI(Tl) crystal. To further reduce the background, nearby slits were dispensed with and the beam was stopped 10 m away from the target. (auth)
