FISSION GAS RELEASE FROM URANIUM DIOXIDE. Topical Report on UO$sub 2$ Pellet Fabrication and Characterization
Fabrication and characterization of the UO/sub 2/ pellets performed in FIAT in order to obtain the 8l specimens selected according to a statistical design of the experiments are described in detail. Hydrogen sirtering was used to pelietize three ceramic grade UO/sub 2/ powders of different origin: Mallinckrodt (natural and 3 percent enriched), C.E.A. (natural), and C.N.E.N. (natural). Mallinckrodt and C.E.A. powders were produced with dry methods (calcination and hydrogen reduction) whereas the C.N.E.N. powder was produced with a wet method (precipitation of UO/sub 2/ hydrate from solution in reducing medium, and hydrogen calcination of the obtained powder). Characterization of the UO/sub 2/ powders was done by measuring the following properties: real density (CCl/sub 4/), tap density, O/U ratio, average particle diameter (Fisher), total surface area (BET), external surface area (Blaine), roughness factor, open porosity distribution (pressurized mercury technique), differential thermal analysis (DTA). Characterization of the pellet samples was done by measuring the following properties: density, open and closed porosity as a function of density, open porosity distribution (pressurized mercury technique), grain size, and closed porosity (micrography).
