MAGNETIC DEFLECTION SYSTEMS FOR DEFLECTING CHARGED PARTICLES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4648802

A system for deflecting a beam of charged particles through 90 deg and a particle accelerator utilizing the system are patented. Two magnetic deflectors are mounted on a rigid frame, at least one of the deflectors being movable to adjust the distance between the deflectors along the path of the particles. Each deflector can deflect the particles through 45 deg around a curved path of radius r. If the distance between the deflectors is 2r and the incident beam is parallel sided, the emergent beam will also be parallel. The particles are accelerated in an accelerator before entering the deflecting system. Heavier particles in the beam can be used to provide correcting signals to stabilize the voltage of the accelerator. Accurate control and measurement of the beam energy can be obtained by controlling accurately only the field of the first magnetic deflector. (M.P.G.)
