COMMAND RESONANCE CHARGING SYSTEM FOR THE ASTRON ACCELERATOR

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4648689

The 5-Mev, 200-amp, electron source for the Astron machine is a magnetic induction linear accelerator consisting of a series of pulse transformers fed from 471 parallel, 36-megawatt, line-type modulators. The pulse forming networks for the modulators are parallel, RG218/U coaxial cables, with a length of 0.4 mu sec. The pulse forming networks are charged by four command resonancecharge, voltage-regulated, power supplies, each capable of furnishing 35 kv plus or minus 0.2%, 60 pps into a 3.3- mu F load. The voltage is regulated over the range of 20 to 35 kv, independent of repetition rate, by a crowbar circuit. Methods for reducing the effects of transients are presented. (auth)
