SHIELDING PROPERTIES OF ASCURED BARITE CONCRETE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4648530

The fast neutron attenuation was found to be approximately exponential. The measured relaxation lengths of barite concrete in the as-cured condition are respectively lengths was attributed to the water loss (0.07 gm/cm/sup 3/) that occurred while the barite concrete was in the test wells, the water being driven off by heat absorbed from the thermal shield. In the first test a measured fast neutron removal cross section of 0.0892 cm/sup -1/ was obtained for a concrete density of 3.55 gm/cm/sup 3/g. This value agrees within about 7 per cent with the calculated removal cross section of 0.0831 cm/sup -1/. In the last test the variation between experimental and calculated values was about 6 per cent. These variations can be attributed largely to uncertainties in the composition of the concrete. (auth)
