MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF $alpha$Fe$sub 2$$O$$sub 3$ SINGLE CRYSTALS

From the study of comprehensive magnetic measurements of isotherms, remanent magnetization, and hysteresis along different directions of alpha Fe/ sub 2/O/sub 3/ single crystals of both natural and synthetic origin, it is indicated that the magnetic properties of both kinds of material are qualitatively about the same but quantitatively different. The inherent weak ferromagnetism of the material can be observed not only in the (III) plane above the Morin transition but also along the STA100! direction below the transition. For the Elba crystal a graphical representation of the ferromagnetic state was constructed to show the direction, the magnitude, and the turning of the remanence vector between the (111) plane and the STA111! axis in the transition region. ln order to account for all the experimental facts nt is proposed that the slightly unequal sublattice moments form canted antiferromagnetic domains and the domain axes in turn form equilateral triangular arrangement.
