DECAY OF $sup 131$Ba-$sup 131$Cs

The absolute intensities of eight gamma rays emitted following electron capture in Ba/sup 131/ were determined: 0.130 Mev 0.600 Mev (0.032), 0.820 Mev (0.0034), 0.910 Mev (0.0009), and 1.04 Mev (0.017). The method used was to prepare Ba/sup 131/ free from its Cs/sup 131/ daughter, allow the Cs/sup 131/ activity to grow in, separate the Cs/sup 131/ activity from the parent and measure its activity, measure the gamma activity of the Ba/sup 131/ by gamma spectrometry, and calculate the absolute amount of Ba/sup 131/ from parent daughter growth relationships. The half life of Cs/sup 131/ was determined to be 9.83 plus or minus 0.28 days. The ratio of the pile neutron activation cross- sections for the production of Ba/sup 131/ and Ba/sup 131/ was found to be sigma /sub 130// sigma /sub 132/ = 1.36 plus or minus 0.08. (auth)
