The various methods for measuring the coefficient gamma are discussed in connection with the use of a point source of fast neutrons. This coefficient (average number of secondary neutrons) was measured for 14-Mev neutrons in uranium (2.75 plus or minus 0.15), lead (1.70 plus or minus 0.07), copper (1.43 plus or minus 0.03), iron (1.10 plus or minus 0.08), and oxygen (0.81 plus or minus 0.12). The coefficient was also measured for 2.5-Mev neutrons in uranium (1.13 plus or minus 0.08). The (n,2n) cross section was determined for 14-Mev neutrons on iron (0.24 plus or minus 0.12 barn) and lead (1.8 plus or minus 0.2 barns). The (n,3n) cross section for 14-Mev neutrons on uranium was measured to be 0.17 barn. The inelastic scattering cross sections of 14-Mev neutrons on uranium, lead, copper, and iron are also reported and compared with cross sections calculated from the statistical theory. Attempts are made to present reasons for the disagreement found between the calculated values and the experimental results. (TTT)
