A SYSTEM FOR THE CONTROL OF DRIFT IN A MULTI-CHANNEL GAMMA RAY SPECTROMETER
A drift control system is described which is capable of correcting for the drift in a multi-channel gamma spectrometer. The system corrects both for the over-all drift due to gain changes, and for the zero-point drift which is apparent in some multi-channel analyzers. Two radioactive sources were used as energy standards and the ferrite ore core memory of the analyzer was monitored to determine if the resulting peaks were located in the correct channels. If not, the high voltage to the photomultiplier, and/or the lower discriminator setting were adjusted by a servosystem to bring the peaks into the correct channels. Various sources of drift in a gamma spectrometer are discussed, together with the effectiveness of the control system in making corrections. The drift control system described is capable of maintaining the spectrometer within one channel of calibration. (auth)
