A technique is described for determining the concentration of C/sup 14/ in a liquid sample by counting the number of tracks on a nuclear emulsion. The emulsion PR2 is particularly suitable because of its high content in silver bromide grains of very small size. Thus it is possible to detect even the tracks of short-range particles. The number of tracks is proportional to both the radioactivity of the sample and the time of exposure. The method was standardized by spreading a 1% solution of glycine-C/sup 14/ in liquid gelatine on the nuclear emulsion, and counting the number of sensitized grains per square centimeter under a microscope. The best results were obtained when no more than 15 to 20 grains were present per unit area, since the tracks tended to overlap and to give lower counts than expected, at high values. A correction curve is given to correct the number of tracks counted to the real number of tracks present. (TTT)
