THERMODYNAMICS OF CERTAIN REFRACTORY COMPOUNDS. PART II. CONTINUED THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON AN EXTENDED LIST. Quarterly Progress Report No. 5, June 1, 1963 to August 31, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4645010

The primary objective of this project, to evaluate and compile thermodynamic data for the refractory borides, carbides, nitrides, and oxides of some 31 elements, is being continued. As in the previous quarter, the compounds of the following 10 elements are being emphasized as follows: zirconium, hafnium, tantalum, tungsten, nlobium, titanium, molybdenum, thorium, beryllium, and silicon. Complete data evaluations and thermodynamic tables are presented for 25 compounds. These include beryllium nitride, hafnium dioxide gas, molybdenum carbides (2), niobium diboride, niobium oxides (5), silicon oxides (2), vanadium dioxide (gas), and zirconium oxides (2). Experimental studies which have been devoted to a spectroscopic study of the vapors of silicon carbide have been discontinued because of difficulties in achieving high temperatures in the apparatus.
