OFF-RESPONSE OF ELECTRORETINOGRAM INDUCED BY X-RAY STIMULATION

The ability of the grass frog Rana pipiens to produce an electroretinogram (ERG) in response to x rays, similar in some respects to the ERG produced in response to light, is reported. The on-response to x rays is comparable to the on-response to light. However, the off-response to x rays differs considerably from the off-response to light, and, moreover, differs in frogs of altered physiological condition (depending on the season, state of hibernation, and nutrition). Animals in prime physical condition show a very small off-response which involves a complex relation to the intensity and duration of the stimulus. Starved frogs show a very slow off-response, characterized by considerable amplitude and duration. All degrees of response were observed between these two extremes. It was concluded that physiological condition. related to inadequate nutrition, rather than the physiological changes associated with hibernation or reproduction, is responsible for the response observed. It is suggested that the human eye, similar in response in many respects to the frog eye or the eyes of other mammals, might produce off- responses to x rays similar to those described above for frogs, and, if so, they be related to a comparable physiological condition.
