ON THE PROBLEM OF CARCINOGENESIS BY ROENTGEN AND GAMMA RAYS

Journal Article · · Wien. Med. Wochschr.
OSTI ID:4644725
Evidence implicating ionizing radiation in carcinogenesis is reviewed. The 1st case of radiation-induced cancer was reported in 1902; as early as 1911 94 such cases had been recorded. These early cancers were invariably found in skin inadvertently exposed to very high doses of x rays. Subsequently. many cases have been attributed to a single acute exposure. Various reported evidence relating malignancy to prior exposure to radiation is reviewed, including that relating to the increased incidence of leukemia in radiologists, thyroid tumor in children irradiated for thymus disorders, and cancer in the Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors.
