Title: VAULT LINER COATING INVESTIGATION. BUILDING 056-SNAP 8--FLIGHT PROTOTYPE TEST FACILITY--SANTA SUSANA

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4641943· OSTI ID:4641943

Based upon a literature search, coatings were chosen for test. Coating contractors were asked to apply their coatings on 2EC or 6061 aluminum samples supplied by Atomics International. The coated samples were irradiated along with uncoated aluminum. The infrared absorption of coated samples was determined prior to irradiation. The infrared absorption after irradiation was determined only on coatings that had a sufficiently high rate of decay. It was found that a sodium stlicate coating prepared by the Bechtel Corporation was the most satisfactory coating tested and wtll meet the requirements of the Building 056 vault liner. However, the abrasion resistance (adhesion) of this coating is marginal and studies should be conducted to improve this quality. Flame-sprayed ten percent titanium dioxide-- 90% alumina also appeared satisfactory in all respects except that some samples had a decay time longer than 30 days. Two black epoxies appeared to be promising but they tended to be impregnated by mercury. It is recommended that the sodium silicate paints be developed further to improve their adhesive and cohesive strength. Titanium dioxide is an excellent filler in paints. A determination should be made of the impurities which decrease the decay rate of flame-spray coatings containing titanium oxide. The epoxies appear to be on the threshold of utility and further work should be done to increase their reliability as atomic-irradiation-resistant coatings. (auth)
