A press to permit metal to be passed through the stages of heating, extrusion, and cooling in a protective gas atmosphere is patented. Instead of the conventional heating furnace, an electrical heating device directly precedes the billet container and is in axial alignment with it. The hot billet is transferred to the billet container by the punch of the press. The space between the head of the press and the bedplate is enclosed in a shell, which may contain a protective gas.
