CHANGES IN COLOR AND ELECTRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF GAMMA-RAY IRRADIATED SHIELDING WINDOW GLASS (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Tokyo Metropolitan Isotope Centre Ann. Rept.
OSTI ID:4639314
The coloration of shielding window glass of various kinds by gamma irradiation was studied. With Co/sup 60/ as the radiation source, 23 plus or minus 3 deg C as irradiation temperature, 10/sup 5/ r/h as irradiation dose rate, and 10/sup 5/--10/sup 7/ r as total dose, the coloration increased gradually. The volume resistivity of glass and its change by gamma irradiation were measured. 100 v were applied to a sheet of glass sandwiched between two electrodes to measure the time change of its electric resistance. The quantity of induced space charge by radiation was calculated by time integration of the current that was obtained from the reciprocal of the resistance. Resistance of high density glass was found to become minimum--hence, the current becomes maximum --at 10/sup 6/ r and increased as the dose increased, but the resistance of medium density glass decreased gradually. The resistance change is exponential and always positive at any dose. This testifies that glass is electretized by radiation. On the other hand, linearity was established between the quantity of space charge and the dose in a range of 10/sup 5/-4 x 10/sup 6/ r. This suggests the possibility of the high density glass to be utilized for dosimetry. (P.C.H.)
