At high neutron energies (E/sub n/), the average kinetic energy E/sub k/ of the fission fragment is independent of the excitation energy of the fissioning nucleus, and a linear increase in the average number of prompt neutrons nu can be observed with increasing neutron energy E/sub n/. Values of nu and E/sub k/ were measured at low neutron energies (E/sub n/) in order to detect possible effects associated with the discrete spectrum obtained by fission with s- and p- neutrons. Values of nu (E/sub n/) were determined for E/sub n/ = 0 to 1.0 Mev, and values of E/sub k/(E/sub n/) were determined for E/sub n/ = 0 to 2.5 Mev. The results can be represented by the equation E/sub n/ = DELTA E/sub k/ + a DELTA nu , where a is the reciprocal of the term d nu /dE/sub n/ = 0.13 Mev/sup - 1/, which characterizes the linear increase in nu with increasing E/sub n/ at high excitation energies. Calculated values of nu ' = nu /sub t/ + (d nu /dE/ sub n/) (E/sub n/ -- DELTA E/sub k/) are compared with directly measured values of nu for values of E/sub n/ = 0 to 1.5 Mev. The experimental results show that at low neutron energies (E/sub n/ < 0.5 Mev), there is a difference in the kinetic energies of the fission fragments and a difference in nu during fission by s- and p-neutrons.
