Infrared spectra of Ln(SiO/sub 4/)O (Ln = Dy, Eu, Gd, La, Lu, Nd, Sc, Sm, Y, and Yb) separated the pyro- and orthosilicate compounds into three groups according to their constitution diagrams. Spectra of certain oxyorthosilicates exhibited bond oscillations in the Lm--O--Ln bond incorporating O/sup 2-/. The bonds covalence is increasing from La yields Lu (and La yields Y yields Sc).
