Synthesis of Deuteriated Methyl Benzoates and Dimethyl Phthalates

As part of an investigatron of the infrared spectra of carbonyl compounds, the following deuterated methyl benzoates and dimethyl phthalates were synthesized: C/sub 6/H/sub 5/CO/sub 2/CO/sub 3/, C/sub 6/D/sub 5/CO/sub 2/CD/sub 3/, C/sub 6/ H/sub 4/(CO/sub 2/CO/sub 3/)/sub 2/, C/sub 6/D/sub 4/(CO/sub 2/CH/ sub 3/)/sub 2/, and C/sub 6/D/sub 4/(CO/sub 2/CD/sub 3/)/sub 2/. The deterium contents of the compounds were determined by the method of Jones and MacKenzie. (M.C.G.)
