MICROWAVE AMPLIFICATION BY INTERACTION BETWEEN ELECTRON BEAM AND PLASMA

When an electron beam modulated by a microwave signal passes through plasma in which the plasma frequency is close to the frequency of this signal, then the electrons agitated thermally in the plasma oscillate with this frequency, and consequentiy an electron space-charge wave grows in the plasma. When this wave and the slow and fast spacecharge waves in the electron beam interact mutually, it may be expected that the microwave signal in the electron beam is amplified. This problem is analyzed theoretically. First, the propagation constants and the characteristic impedance of the electron space- charge wave in the plasma are analyzed. Next it is confirmed that the space- charge wave in the electron beam can be amplified by mutual coupling with the electron space-charge wave in the plasma. Finally the amplification action by three-modes coupling between the electron space-charge wave in the plasma and the slow and fast electron space-charge waves in the electron beam is confirmed. As a result of a numerical example, the gain of this amplifier is considerably high (approximately 38 db/cm), although its frequency band-width is very narrow (less than 60 kc). (auth)
