NUCLEAR FUSION REACTORS WITH ANNULAR PINCH DISCHARGE AND THE METHODS OF OPERATING THEM

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4637439
A method of operating a thermonuclear reactor having an annular pinch discharge is patented. The gas discharge is contracted by its own magnetic field, and the energy required for the gas discharge is generated by discharging an inductive accumulator. The primary coil of an intermittently opernting transformer is used as the accumalator, and the annular gas discharge forms the secondary winding. A second transformer is provided between the d-c source and the first transformer. The primary winding of the second transformer is short- circuited when the current in the primary of the first transformer is a maximum. The current in the primary of the first transformer is switched off by switching the current through a resistance. Details of the construction of the switching devices are described. (M.P.G.)
