ELASTIC SCATTERING OF $pi$$sup -$ MESONS ON PROTONS AT 3.5 Bev/c (in Russian)

Elastic scattering of pi /sup -/ mesons by protons at 3.5 Bev/c was measured using a 25-cm liquid hydrogen bubble chamber placed in a 14 k Gauss magnetic field. 540 events of elastic scattering were selected by comparing the angles of emissions and secondary particle momenta with anticipated magnitudes for elastic scattering. The total backward scattering was 50 plus or minus 20 mu b. Calculations of A(s) showed A = 7.36 plus or minus 0.44 (Bev/c)/sup -2/. The mean magnitude A(s) for 1.5 to 16 Bev was 7.61. Hence, the assumption that pi -p and pi - pi scattering are determined only by vacuum poles is not in agreement with experimental data. (R.V.J.)
