USE OF "BINAL" IN REACTOR CONTROL RODS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4635393
Tests were made on Binal, a B--Al alloy made by a wrought powdered metallurgical technique, to evaluate its use in reactor control rods. Microstructure, tensile tests, corrosion tests, and weld tests indicated that Binal had good properties for reactor use. The mechanical properties of Binal are listed. A comparison is made of the reactivity worths of Binal and of Cd. Binal was selected as the control material in both Spert I and IV, and some operational experience with Binal control rods is described. (D.L.C.)
