THERMAL NEUTRON SPECTRAL AND SPATIAL DISTRIBUTIONS IN LIGHT WATER MODERATED URANIUM LATTICES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4635087
The thermal disadvantage factors for cylindrical U rods in hexagonal lattices were measured by activation techniques. Monte Carlo calculated factors obtained for these arrays with the Nelkin kernel were 4.3% lower than those obtained with the Radkowsky (free proton) kernel for a wide range of H/sub 2/O: U volume ratios. For an 8:1 ratio, the measured value agreed with the Nelkin kernel value, but for 1: 1 to 2.1, this calculated value was too high. The thermal ffux distribution measured in water poisoned with Cd was successfully calculated with the Nelkin kernel. The Radkowsky kernel gave a softer spectrum in disagreement with the measurements.
