A STUDY OF THE Ti-Zr-O SYSTEM

Phase relationships along the vertical sections from Ti to ZrO/sub 2/ and from TiO to ZrO/sub 2/ were investigated in the Ti-- Zr--O system. Arc melted alloys were prepared using high-purity ingredients. Samples were annealed, quenched, and subjected to metallographic preparation and study. A cursory melting point-composition study was conducted. Approximately 390 duplicate heat-treated specimens were forwarded to ARF for correlative work. The vertical section between Ti and ZrO/sub 2/ consists of areas of BETA , alpha + BETA , alpha , alpha + X, alpha + X + ZrO/sub 2/, alpha + ZrO/sub 2/, and ZrO/sub 2/ phases. The X'' phase is presumed to be TiO; some uncertainty stiIl exists in this identification. The section between TiO and ZrO/sub 2/ was observed to consist of TiO, TiO + ZrO/sub 2/, TiO + alpha + ZrO/sub 2/, alpha + ZrO/sub 2/, and ZrO/sub 2/ phases. The amount of alpha phase never amounts to more than a few per cent by volume. Typical microstructures along both vertical sections are presented; x-ray and chemical analytical data are tabulated. A limited effort was directed toward a reexamination of the Ti-- O binary system in the 10--25 wt% oxygen region. Some arc melting, heat treating, and microprobe service type work was done. (auth)
