THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF ALKALINE EARTH OXIDES

Journal Article · · Brit. J. Appl. Phys.

The comparative thermal conductivities of sintered powders of alkaline earth oxides were measured in vacuum over the range of temperatures 450 to 720 deg C. The thermal conductivities of MgO, CaO, SrO, and (BaSr)O were between 0.3 x 10/sup -5/ and 2.5 x 10/supn -5/ cal sec/sup -1/ cm/sup -1/ degC/sup -1/, but the thermal conductivity of BaO was at least four times as great, i.e., 8 x 10/ sup -5/ to 11.5 x 10/sup -5/ cal sec/sup -1/ cm/sup -1/ degC /sup -1/. Possible reasons for this anomaly are discussed; the most likely reason seems to be some difference in the physical structure of the sintered barium oxide. (auth)
