THE PLUTONIUM EXTRACTION PLANT AND ITS OPERATION (in French)

The flow-sheet of the plutonium extraction plant at Marcoule is given and briefly described. The process is divided into four phases: nitric acid dissolution of the fuel, extraction of the fission products, separation of the U from the Pu, and decontamination and purification of the U and Pu. The problems posed by the industrial processing of irradiated fuels include the presence of highly radioactive fission products, the high yields of Pu necessary, and the precision necessary in the chemical analyses. The operational experience gained with the plant is reviewed briefly. (J.S.R.)
