METHOD FOR SEPARATING URANIUM FROM DEPLETED, URANIUM, ZIRCONIUM, AND FISSION PRODUCTS CONTAINING URANIUM FUEL ELEMENTS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4632577
A method is described for recovering uranium from depleted zirconium and fission-products containing uranium fuel elements by converting zirconium into zirconium tetrachloride and uranium into uranium hexafluoride. The method comprises the steps of converting the uranium fuel element in a reaction vessel with gaseous hydrochloric acid by locating it within a zone of high turbulence of aluminum oxide, removing the formed zirconium tetrachloride, introducing gaseous fluorine into the reaction vessel, and extracting the uranium hexafluoride.
