RESULTS OBTAINED WITH LIGHT-WEIGHT RATE METER FOR NEUTRON SOIL-MOISTURE MEASUREMENTS

Journal Article · · Soil Science (U.S.)
The light-weight rate meter described by Van Bavel was used with a 2 mC source in a Troxler 104 probe to measure neutron soil-moisture. Precision of 2 cps, equivalent to 1.00 per cent moisture or less, was obtained in Hawaiian sotls in a moisture range of 10 to 40 per cent by volume. Utilizing the 1620 IBM computer and a multiple correlation analysis program, the calibration curve was defined. Soil pite were opened to the access tubing, and 3-in. cores were removed in duplicate. The slopes were 0.0101 for Puunene silty clay, 0.0106 for Paia silty day, 0.0117 for Catano sand, 0.0117 for Keahua silty clay, and 0.0133 for Maliko silty clay. It was concluded that the neutron moisture meter described by Van Bavel can be used to measure moisture in Hawaiian soils with a precision of plus or minus 1 per cent. (H.M.G.)
