The glass formation region of different lanthanum borate ternary systems containing barium, cadmium, germanium, tantalum, and tungsten was established. The viscosity of molten ternary lanthanum borate systems containing barium, tantalum, and tungsten was determined by the rotating concentric cylinder method. The electrical resistivity of the same systems in the molten state was obtained by measuring the resistance with high frequency a-c bridge. The density of these systems and also of the ternary containing germanium was measured by the sphere- displaceinent method within the temperature range 970 to 1270 deg C. The refractive index for the same four ternary systems was obtained by means of a refractometer. The different physical properties, as observed for these systems, were interpreted on the basis of the proposed lanthanum borate matrix and the dual role played by the modifying oxides in inorganic glasses. The density of binary rare earth borates containing small amounts of lanthanum, neodymium, samarium, and yttrium oxides (up to 0.5 mol.%) was determined by the sphere displacement method. The viscosity of these borate systems was calculated from the sphere-displacement data following the method of Stott, Irvine, and Turner. The surface tension of the binary borates containing lanthanum, samarium, and yttrium was determined by the maximum bubble pressure method. Samarium and neodymium seemed to act purely as network nrodifiers, whereas yttrium played the double role of network modifier and network former. (Dissertation Abstr.)
