RADIATION-INDUCED PHASE CHANGE AND RECOVERY IN ZrO$sub 2$

Journal Article · · Journal of Nuclear Materials (Netherlands)
Thick but adherent films of oxide were produced on Zr5 wt% V alloy discs in an autoclave at 300 deg C and the oxidized specimens were irradiated to different doses by fission fragments emitted from a thin film of U/sup 235/ placed in vacuum at a distance of 2 mm from the samples. X-ray diffraction patterns obtained before and after irradiations indicate that the original monoclinic oxide changes into the cubic form, which is characteristic of zirconia when alloyed with certain elements. A sample was held for two hours at various temperatures up to 1000 deg C to study the thermal recovery of the irradiated specimens. A fnirly sharp annealing peak was observed at 770 deg C. However, in specimens annealed up to 1000 deg C only about 50% of the transformed cubic phase reverted to the monoclinic form. (P.C.H.)
