THE HEATING AND FUSION WITHOUT CRUCIBLE BY HIGH-FREQUENCY INDUCTION OF STABILIZED ZIRCONIA (in French)

Journal Article · · Compt. Rend.
OSTI ID:4629485
Experiments made on the high-frequency induction heating of stabilized ZrO/sub 2/ fritted cylinders 25 mm in diameter are reported. The samples are composed of a ZrO/sub 2/- CaO solid solution containing 10% CaO. By the utilization of a frequency of 20 Mc, the penetration depth is of the order of 1 to 3 cm for a sample preheated at 1200 to 1600 deg C. The external layers of the sample remain solid. CeO/sub 2/ and TiO/sub 2/ could be fused under the same conditions. A stabilized zirconia heating element was constructed that can maintain temperatures near 1900 deg C for prolonged heat treatments.
