Title: ARMY GAS-COOLED REACTOR SYSTEMS PROGRAM. Quarterly Progress Report, April 1-June 30, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4629308

The ML-1 power plant did not operate during the report period. The defueling and disassembly of the reactor package was completed and the leak in the pressure vessel identified, as anticipated, as the failure of the lower plenum cap shear pin weld. Disassembly and inspection of the CSN-1 turbine- compressor set revealed cracking in essentially all of the turbine blade roots. The program for repair of this unit was initiated. The repair and assembly of the TSC-670A was completed and open cycle testing was initiated. The testing of a mock-up of the ML-1 pressure vessel was interrupted by a failure of the moderator circulation pump. The examination of the IB-8T-2 (10,000hour ML-1-I prototype) test element did not reveal any evidence of second phase formation which caused severe embrittlement in an earlier test element. The test irradiation of the IB-17R-1 (instrumented ML-1-II prototype) was concluded on schedule and the IB-17R-3 (uninstrumented ML-1-II prototype) was inserted in the GETR loop. The analysis of IB-17R test data indicates that the turbulence promoters perform essentially as predicted. (auth)
