Automatic, Amperometric, Cupferron Titration of Zirconium in Highly Radioactive Solutions
A previously reported amperometric titration of zirconium and cupferron was modified and adapted for hot cell analysis. A titration was devised in which the current is monitored continuously while the titrant is fed in at a constant rate. A stirred mercury pool is the indicating electrode that senses the point where cupferron comes into excess, and a platinum wire is used for the reference. Precision of 1% relative standard deviation is obtainable for benchtop analysis and 1.5% for titrations in a hot cell. The titration was specifically devised for the analysis of zirconium in molten salt reactor fuel, and the titration can be performed directly following dissolution without the need for separations.
