Three types of photomultipliers are discussed. The three differ in cathode diameters, 50, 100, and 150 mm, but utilize the same toroidal multiplier system consisting of 14 amplifier cascades. The construction of these photomultipliers is described. For the 50-mm-diam. cathode type the electrode profiles, the equipotential lines, and the photoelectron trajectories inside the cathode chamber are displayed in a diagram. The focusing systems for the 100and 150-mm cathode types, which are made up of five electrodes, are much more complex and are not shown. The parameters and characteristics of the photomultipliers are determined by illuminating the photocathode surfaces by means of a heat lamp at a color temperature of 2854 deg K, The dependence of the anode sensitivity and of the dark current is determined and displayed as a function of the source voltage for all three sizes of cathodes. The time characteristics of the 150-mm photomultiplier and its stability limits are given in tabular form. (TTT)
