lish) The relative cross sections were measured as a function of neutron energies from 14.13 to 14.78 Mev. Four distinct fluctuations were observed with an average period of 130 kev, corresponding to a haif life of the compound nucleus of 0.5 x 10/sup -20/ sec. The half life for alpha emission of the compound nucleus at 21.6-Mev excitation energy was calculated to be 12 x 10/sup - 20/ sec. The average amplitude of the fluctuations was 0.05 plus or minus 0.01, somewhat less than a theoretical value. (D.C.W.)
