Mercury (II) rapidly reacts with cobalt complexes of the type CH3Co(L)H2O, where L is a Schiff base, to form methylmercury (II) and Co(L) (H2O)2+. Kinetic measurements were made on these reactions which follow a second-order rate expression after correction for a reversible protonation reaction. The reactivity of the series of cobalt complexes is discussed in therms of dπ-pπ bonding in the methylcobalt (III) complex. The reaction of SCN- with Cr (H2O)R2+ (R=CH2Cl, CHCl2) to form Cr (H2O)4R(NCS)+ has also been investigated.
