The influence of the addition of cesium fluoride in a cesium thermionic converter has been investigated. The electron emission of W, Ta and Mo has been measured under free field conditions in the presence of CsF vapor at various pressures and various emitter temperatures. From this, the work function has been calculated using the Richardson equation. The results show an increase of the work function with increasing CsF vapor pressure but only above a certain CsF vapor pressure which depends on the emitter temperature. In the same way the work function of Mo was determined in a mixture of Cs and CsF vapor. An independent variation of the Cs and CsF vapor pressures has been accomplished. The results demonstrate that the Cs vapor pressure required to lower the work function to a certain value could be considerably decreased if a sufficiently high CsF vapor pressure in the cesium diode could be permanently maintained. The measured results cannot be described with the theory of Rasor and Warner.
