LTV Steel`s C-5 and C-6 intensified plate cooled furnaces -- A first look at lining wear

LTV Steel`s Cleveland Works C-6 and C-5 blast furnaces, which are similar in design, were rebuilt in 1989 and 1990 to provide reliable operations at high productivity without damage to the shell for an overall campaign life of 15 years. These original relines included complete shell replacement from hearth to furnace top. 14 rows of copper plates (26 to 36 plates/row) with vertical spacing of 14-3/4 in. were installed for bosh and mantle cooling. Stack cooling consisted of 30 rows of cooling plates with vertical spacing ranging from 15-3/8 in. (lower and middle stack) to 43-in. in the top most rows of the upper stack. The initial plan for these furnaces was to have two intermediate repairs in the 15 year campaign. The first of these repairs were planned for C-6 in 1995 and C-5 in 1996, respectively. Early in 1995, after reviewing blast furnace operation and lining wear measurements on the Cleveland Furnaces, it was decided to delay the intermediate repairs to 1998 (C-6) and 1999 (C-5), by which time both furnaces will have produced approximately 12 MM NTHM. In order to achieve this goal on both furnaces, short repair outages of 24 to 25 days duration for each furnace were scheduled in 1995.
