There are four blast furnaces which are in operation at Kwangyang Works. Each blast furnace has a hearth diameter of 13.2 m and inner volume of 3,800 m{sup 3}, producing a combined output of 11.4 million tonnes per year. The Kwangyang blast furnaces have all flattened casthouses with four tapholes. They have maintained stable operation under high productivity, high PCR and low fuel consumption for the past 10 years. Kwangyang has focused on increasing production and maintaining stable operation without any trouble. Most importantly working conditions have been improved at all blast furnace sites. Nevertheless, the cast house works is still the least developed site among the blast furnace sites. As a means of overcoming this situation, Kwangyang No. 4 blast furnace developed a remote control system for casthouse equipment inside the main control room (MCR) via a process computer. This report will describe the prerequisites which should be solved in advance and the development of remote control systems for operation in severe environments, such as the high levels of gas fumes and dust present in the casthouse.
